About Van Nuys

Van Nuys is part of the central San Fernando Valley area, surrounded by North Hills, Panorama City, Valley Glen, Sherman Oaks, the Sepulveda Basin, Lake Balboa, and Northridge. The nearby Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area includes a number of large, city owned parks, including Woodley Park and Lake Balboa Park. Woodley Park is a perfect picnic spot, and you can even bring your dog to play in the dog park here. Lake Balboa Park is focused on water sports, with boats available to rent and awesome fishing spots.

This community used to be larger, but in 1991 a 45-block section of this city was re-designated as part of Sherman Oaks. The Los Angeles city council made this decision when several original property deeds from the area were uncovered, stating that the properties were part of Sherman Oaks pre-1960. The council agreed to honor the historic zoning of these homes and reattribute them to Sherman Oaks rather than Van Nuys.

Anyone not wishing to attend one of the area’s public schools has the option to attend a local charter high school or one of several religious and nonreligious private schools instead.

Van Nuys has all of the publicly operated infrastructure you would expect to find in a city of this size. It has four outpost of the Los Angeles Fire Department that are designated to protect the Van Nuys community, a local police station, and two branches of the United States Postal Service.
