About Seal Beach

Seal Beach is a small city that lies in the farthest west corner of Orange County. This community has a total population of just fewer than 25,000 residents and a population density of less than 2000 people per square mile, a figure that is low for a Southern California beach town. The median household income in Seal Beach is a little over $50,000. Many of the people living in Seal Beach work blue-collar jobs, with the biggest employer being Boeing. Boeing’s Seal Beach location was originally established to produce parts for NASA’s first manned mission to the moon, Apollo.

Today, Boeing Homeland Security and Services and Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems have their headquarters in the city. At present, they primarily work on satellite systems and other top-secret government projects.

In the early 1940s, during World War 2, the United States navy used the newly constructed Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach as a staging area for the transport of ammunition to and from the Pacific Fleet. Several navy war ships were based out of Long Beach and San Diego, and these battalions were primarily stocked with supplies that passed through Seal Beach.

Living in Seal Beach

Seal Beach is home to the 2nd longest wooden pier in California. This pier has been damaged by storms several times, but it has always been restored to its original condition. Several memorial plaques can be found on the pier, recognizing the rebuilding efforts that have occurred since 1938. Residents of Seal Beach enjoy fishing off the end of the pier and walking out to enjoy a stunning view of the sunset over the water. Surfers also enjoy visiting Seal Beach and the Seal Beach pier, so much so that they have nicknamed the area the Ray Bay.
